On Wednesday Constable Davis brought me Frank Grab, the tramp from the "Horse and Jockey". He had been brought into the station last night by Constable Wallace. He found him drunk, walking along the High Street not far from the "Horse and Jockey". His fingerprints were the same as the ones we found in the dining-room at Four Winds. Also Mr Grab had a handful of dirty pound notes.
I asked him a lot of questions, which were all without any result but then he told me something more. He told me that he had seen the murderer of the Colonel. And as the dead body lay on the ground Frank Grab went to the dead Colonel and took his money. That was all what we found out.
I felt I could be pretty sure that he had not invented the story. Colonel
Townsend had been killed that evening, and I suspected the doctor of being
the murderer. Constable Davis and me went to Four Winds. I asked the doctor
and his wife a lot of questions before they finally broke down. They admitted
all what I had hoped. They asked us for ten minutes on their own before
they would come with us. After ten minutes Constable Davis went upstairs.
But it was too late, they were dead. They had committed SUIDIDE.
