Relationship between Lindo and Waverly

Waverly played chess very well in her youth. She finally became a chess champion. Already in this time she suffered under her mothers behaviour: Lindo always showed off with her talented daughter. Waverly always felt controlled and dominated by her mother. So Waverly took a special role in the relationship between her and her mother. She always cared very much about what her mother thought and she unconsciously tried to fulfil her mother's wishes. All decisions in her life were influenced by Lindo. Although she wants to lead her life on her own she cannot break away from her mother.
Waverly  married  her first husband secretly. She had a bad conscience right from the beginning because of her mother. Otherwise she would have told Lindo about  her marriage. Her husband was a white American and Lindo always wanted a Chinese for her daughter. Perhaps Waverly acted  for spite, but who knows? Anyway she married him and the marriage failed! Waverly blamed her mother for her divorce. She felt that Lindo never accepted her son-in-law and she fineally began to be doubtful about her own husband  herself. So it was clear that the marriage did not work and Waverly  became afraid of  her mothers influence.
She began to realize that she had a great problem with herself. She really wanted to take her  life in her own hands and she wanted to defend her own decesions in front of her mother. Then she met Rick, a young and clever American man who is a few years younger than Waverly. She fell in love with him and  they  decided  to marry.
But right now Waverly is doubtful about her new marriage again. It is her mother again who makes her unsure but Wavely does not want to let Lindo destroy her plans  anymore.
She wants to learn something about her mothers old traditions. So she and Rick think about a honeymoon in their future to China.
