Old-Fashioned

Lindo Jong grew up in China. She grew up with old Chinese traditions, and was the victim of a plot between her mother and her mother-in-law. Although she left China and loved her life in America, the old Chinese traditions left their mark in Lindo's life.

There are many parallels between the behaviour of Lindo's mother and Lindo herself: In China it was common for a girl to marry the man who was chosen by her mother. Lindo suffered under this tradition. Surely she promised herself not to behave like her mother. So Waverly's education seemed to be very different.  What do you think about  the conflicts between Waverly and her mother? What about the pressure Waverly feels?

Lindo is unconsciously influenced by her own education. Deep inside she wants to choose the right husband for her daughter. You could say Lindo does not trust Waverly's judgment and knowledge of human nature. She applies these feelings to her daughter. Consequently Waverly distrusts in herself and becomes unsure about her own feelings.
